GEST Comments on Nomination of Jewell for Interior Secretary
President Obama announced today that he is nominating Sally Jewell, president and CEO of REI and former petroleum engineer at Mobil, as U.S. Secretary of Interior to replace Ken Salazar.
Lori LeBlanc, Executive Director of the Gulf Economic Survival Team, issued the following statement regarding Sally Jewell’s nomination:
We are optimistic that the nomination of Sally Jewell for Interior Secretary will help lead the administration forward in its management of America’s natural resources. The experience that Ms. Jewell brings to bear as a CEO and former petroleum engineer should help her appreciate the benefits of effectively managing our natural resources and encouraging investment in their long-term growth – factors that, in the case of the Gulf of Mexico, seem to have received low priority in recent years.
The prospects for U.S. energy production have never been stronger, yet the need for regulatory clarity to foster that production, particularly in the offshore, is higher than ever. It is our hope that a new Department of the Interior leader with business experience and perspective like Ms. Jewell will better understand the value in generating revenue from developing our Gulf energy resources while creating jobs for American workers.
